The Power of Advertising on Social Media

With how popular social media is now it comes as no surprise that that popularity is nowhere near ending. This popularity is used for advertising as is mentioned in my other blog posts, but how much power does it actually hold?

The fashion industry has benefitted largely from social media by offering famous influencers money to advertise their products, but surprisingly enough smaller influencers usually attract more new customers because of their intimacy and trust with their viewers. It is something very common to see, influencers advertising a product, praising it, and recommending it and companies use this to their advantage. They see what people like from what they have been interacting with and with what's popular at the moment so that they can find the right audience. Companies are aware of the effect that social media has on most people and they see how trustworthy a specific audience can be they thrive and in some way feed off that trust that followers have in who they are following.

Many platforms are used by companies for these types of product placement but the most notable ones are Instagram TikTok, YouTube, and many more. "These platforms attract new customers by offering information about fashion and brands while keeping loyal customers by offering new channels for advertising" (Chu & Seock, 2020)

What are some of your opinions on this?

Thank you 💕

  1. I find it very interesting that smaller influencer attracts more customer than the larger influencer do. After reading that and thinking about it, it makes complete sense that they would because like you said they have more trust with their followers from their intimacy with them. It is interesting to think of media has influenced fashion because I remember when I was younger the way we should show off what we wore was to go somewhere like the mall. But now you are able to show it by simply posting a picture.

  2. Hi!
Awesome topic, one that we all know about but I never really thought about it deeper, like you did. In my opinion, as you said aswell, companies are very aware of the effect that social media has on people, and that they are being very smart about this. From choosing the right person to partner with, where it might be surprising that the influencers with less followers could attract more potential customers, but it actually makes sense I think. Of course not always, but yes. Some influencers with many followers could also buy these follows, or could aquire them through some giveaways where people have to follow them in order to participate, and these followers then might forget to unfollow and they are just not that active as followers who really like the influencer. I also think that the advertising belongs to the social media, but the influencers shouldn’t “overadvertise”, because some of them just take any partnership with every company, and they just do it for money, which is also sometimes not good for the company because if the influencer really uses their products and really like the brand, followers could recognize that and they would trust them more. Great job with the blog!
